Are we going to see whales?
We guarantee a humpback whale sighting on your trip or your money is refunded! The waters surrounding Juneau are a feeding area for humpback whales. These huge creatures have migrated from Hawaii to spend the summer feeding on herring.
What is the weather going to be like?
Juneau is located in the heart of the Tongass National Rain Forest averaging nearly 100 inches of rain per year. Luckily this does not impact whale watching one bit! Both decks on the SCANIA are partially covered which offers great protection from the elements. Th average temperature range in Juneau during the summer is 64F. Even if it feels warm on land, the sea breeze can be quiet cool. Dress in layers, bring a rain coat and a good attitude for a fun day regardless of the weather!
What other wildlife will we see?
It is impossible to predict what we will see as each trip is unique and wild life is unexpected. Potentially we can view bald eagles, harbor seals, steller sea lions, sea otters, and orcas.
Will I see killer whales?
Killer Whales also known as Orcas do visit our local waters. So, yes there is a chance that you’ll see them. However, they live in small pods that range up to 1,000 miles up and down the coast while they forage for food. This means that it is down to luck as to whether you see them on your whale watch.
How long is the trip?
The total length of the trip is 4.5 hours. We spend 3.5 hours on the water. This is longer than most whale watching operators and maximizes your opportunity to see whales and wildlife!
What should I wear or bring on the boat?
*Dress in layers (the weather can change quickly in either direction) and be sure to have a rain coat if the sun is not shining on the day of your departure.
*Gloves, hat, closed toe shoes
*Camera (we provide binoculars although many guests still bring their own)
*Additional snacks (we provide soda, water and crackers with salmon spread)
Is there a restroom on the boat?
Yes, we have a flushing head (that’s the nautical word for “restroom”) on the boat.
Where will I meet the tour?
This is arranged when you book your trip but we provide transportation from your cruise ship or hotel.
How many people will be on my tour?
On most tours we limit the number of people to 8 or 9. However, with family or tour groups we can accommodate up to 12 people.
Will I get sea sick?
The twin hull design of the SCANIA provides a stable and smooth ride. Guests are repeatedly amazed by how comfortable the trip is. If you do suffer from “motion sickness” remember to take needed medication to maximize your enjoyment. However we are so sure that you will not get sick on our catamaran, therefore offer a FULL refund if you do!
Can I change plans or cancel at any time?
Yes you may change plans or cancel at any time, however we would appreciate 24 hours notice. We will give you a full refund regardless.
